Welcome to CWSF 2016!

sam, 2016-05-14 17:42 -- Jessie MacAlpine

Welcome to Canada-Wide Science Fair 2016! The vibrant McGill University will soon be home to 480 of Canada’s top young scientists that will be competing for medals, prizes, scholarships and trips throughout the week. Youth Science Canada, the host committee, ambassador team and volunteers have been working hard over the past few years to bring you a fantastic week filled with inspirational speakers, cool science and lots of fun.

Today we welcomed the majority of delegations with our purple-glad greeting team of youth and delegate ambassadors. Despite the sunny morning turning into a drizzly afternoon, spirits remained high in anticipation of the week ahead. While finalists and delegates toured the stunning McGill campus, Team UV put the finishing touches on the exhibit hall in preparation for project set-up tomorrow. Following the arrival of the remaining delegations tomorrow morning, the day will end with the exciting Opening Ceremony in Molson Stadium to officially launch CWSF 2016. The event, titled “Flavours of Montreal,” is sure to be an entertaining and delicious affair. In fact, you might just be able to accomplish number seven on the list below by tasting some of the local delicacies for which Montreal is famous!

On that note, in preparation for the week ahead, here’s a few tips to make the most out of your Canada-Wide Science Fair experience:

1.       Make a new friend.

2.       Meet a student from each of the provinces and territories.

3.       Become friends with your youth ambassador.

4.       Get your exercise by exploring the hill on campus as you tour McGill University.

5.       Learn about a new area of science.

6.       Engage with us online and share your memories with #CWSF.

7.       Try some famous French Canadian cuisine at Flavours of Montreal

8.       Trade pins and collect as many as possible.

9.       Learn how to describe your project in French and English.

10.     Post a set-up selfie with #mysetupselfie

Today’s fun fact about Montreal is that it has the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada and the second highest in North America, only after New York City! It's a good thing we’ll get to try some of that cuisine at the Opening Ceremonies tomorrow!

Don’t forget to invite your family friends to like the Canada-Wide Science Festival Facebook page to keep up to date on our blog posts and all of the fun events happening this week. You can also follow us on Twitter @cwsf_ysc and Instagram @CWSF_ESPC. Safe travels to the remaining delegations as they make their way to Montreal tomorrow!

On a final note, don’t forget to take a selfie and tag it with #mysetupselfie tomorrow during project set-up in the exhibit hall.

Welcome to Montreal!
