On January 30, 2013, Google launched the third annual Google Science Fair. This online science competition is open to young people aged 13 to 18 from around the world - working as an individual or in a team. Adam Noble (18) of Lakefield, Ontario won the International Cooperation Award at today's award ceremony for the 2012 European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), in Bratislava, Slovakia. In addition to Canada, the guest countries competing for this award, with a cash value of 5,000 Euros, included China, New Zealand, South Korea, and three top projects from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the USA. Adam Noble (18) of Lakefield, Ontario is representing Canada at the 2012 European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), which opened today in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bringing together 83 projects from 36 countries in the European Union (EU), associated and other countries, and invited guest countries, EUCYS is the science fair championships for the EU. Youth Science Canada is saddened to report that CWSF 2011 alumna, Eleesha Wijeratne from Toronto and her father were killed in a head-on crash on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) last weekend. A teen was driving the wrong way on the ramp from the QEW to the northbound Highway 427 when his SUV collided head-on with the family's minivan. Eleesha dreamed of becoming a chemical engineer. Yassine Bouanane (17) of Laval, Québec has been selected as one of 15 finalists in the second annual Google Science Fair. His project, Soleil, où es-tu? (Sun, where are you?), involved the development of a device that automatically orients solar panels perpendicular to the sun to maximise their energy output. Bouanane's device delivers 36.5% more energy than a standard solar panel under the same conditions. En savoir plus

Four Canadian projects are among the 90 regional finalists announced today in the second annual Google Science Fair (GSF). Similar in structure to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, the GSF groups projects into three age categories with all projects in the age category competing against each other, regardless of the type of science.
