Thu, 2011-09-15 00:10 -- Reni Barlow

Nicholas Schiefer (17) of Pickering, Ontario has been invited to join former Toronto mayor David Miller, and a host of other diverse and passionate speakers who will gather on September 23rd at the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning in Toronto to share TEDxTalks on the theme of Redefinition.

Nicholas won a gold medal, the senior Information Challenge Award, the Actuarial Foundation of Canada award and scholarships to five Canadian universities at the 2011 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Toronto in May. His project, Apodora: Markov Chain-Inspired Microsearch, involved the development of a better way to search small web documents, such as tweets and news headlines. Created using linear algebra and discrete math, his novel algorithm gives results with approximately twice the precision of standard search algorithms when applied to short text items and has captured significant media attention over the past few months.

Nicholas was also a member of Team Canada-MILSET 2011, presenting his project at the MILSET Expo-Sciences International in Bratislava, Slovakia in July.
