Hayley Todesco from Canada received the 2014 Stockholm Junior Water Prize on September 3rd for inventing a method that uses sand filters to treat oil contaminated water and recover water for reuse. H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden presented the prize at an award ceremony during the World Water Week in Stockholm. Read more

For the second year in a row, a Canadian has captured the prestigious International Cooperation Prize at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS). Earlier today, Jessie MacAlpine of Woodstock, Ontario (left in photo) won the award for her project, Mustard Oil as an Apicomplexan-Targeting Drug Therapy for Plasmodium falciparum - a promising cure for malaria that uses a cooking oil common in developing countries and costs one million times less than the current leading antimalarial drug. Ten top young scientists from Ontario and Québec represented Canada at the MILSET Expo-Sciences International from September 13-19 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The biennial event, which featured over 1,500 participants from 65 countries in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, welcomed over 30,000 visitors, including students, members of the general public, and special guests. Ann Makosinski (15) of Victoria, BC has been selected as one of 15 finalists in the third annual Google Science Fair. Her project, The Hollow Flashlight, involved the design and construction of a highly original device that converts body heat into light resulting in a steady flashlight beam without the use of batteries or other energy sources. "I got the inspiration for my project when I found out humans are actually like 100 watt walking light bulbs. We have so much thermal energy in us, so why aren't we using it?", she noted. Read more

Four Canadians are among the 90 regional finalists announced today in the third annual Google Science Fair (GSF). Similar in structure to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, the GSF groups projects into three age categories with all projects in the age category competing against each other, regardless of the type of science. This evening, at its 150th Anniversary Gala, Bayer Canada honoured select Canadians who have made a mark on society through science and innovation. Those recognized included Reni Barlow, Executive Director of Youth Science Canada. The event, held at the MaRS Centre in Toronto, assembled 300 members of the Canadian health, agricultural, and science industries to celebrate the achievements of the 23 honourees. Read more
